He then completed his post-graduate training at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons (MD and residency) in New York City under full scholarship. There he received his medical degree.

He also received his orthopaedic residency training in NYC at New York Orthopaedic Hospital and adult and pediatric spine fellowship training at the renowned Twin Cities Spine and Scoliosis Center (Fellowship), Minneapolis Minnesota.

Dr. Hepler worked as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University before entering into private practice.

He has authored multiple research publications and textbook chapters and presented research and talks at numerous national and international forums.

Dr. Hepler is an active member of the North American Spine Society and Scoliosis Research Society. There he serves on various committees and an editor of the journal Spine Deformity. He also had the pleasure to serve as a US Naval Flight Surgeon (LCDR).

He completed two tours to the Mediterranean and middle east aboard the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt and one tour with the F-18 strike fighter training squadron.
