Stay pain-free during the holidays!
The holidays should be a time of joy, excitement, and happiness. However, back pain, regardless of time or place, can make anyone’s life miserable. There are, of course, many conditions that can cause back pain as the spine is a very complex part of the body. We want you to be kind to your spine and enjoy the holidays pain-free. Today our spine surgeon in Palm Beach County, Dr. Matthew Hepler, will give you 3 tips on how to take care of your spine and enjoy this holiday season to its fullest.
- Bending and lifting the right way
First of all, don’t hesitate to ask for help. If some heavy boxes need to be carried and lifted, get someone to help you. The same rule applies to hanging lights and ornaments. Before and after all the activities, which include bending and twisting, remember to stretch your back. Warming up your back muscles before and after can avoid back pain. Also, remember the proper lifting technique. Do not lift with your back, but with your legs instead. Keep the heavier loads as close to your body as possible. Don’t hold them with your arms fully extended.
- Travel smart
As you probably know, sitting down for longer periods of time is unhealthy for your spine and can be a contributing factor in back pain. Whether you are driving long distances or flying, consider bringing a small pillow for extra lumbar support. Remember to take several stops regularly and stretch your back while you are driving. Or stand up a few times, walk around and stretch during your flight. It will definitely help your spine.
- Take time out to relax and de-stress
Winter holidays are supposed to be full of joy, but they can also be stressful. When we are under stress, we tend to be more tense, and tensed muscles can cause pain. Make sure to take time out from your busy schedule to rest and relax. Simply, do things that you find relaxing. Also, get enough sleep, as a lack of sleep increases stress levels and it can make your back pain worse.
Dr. Hepler would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday, warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year. May the Holiday season fill your home with joy, your heart with love, and your life with laughter. Happy Holidays!
